18 January 2025 – Saturday – Family Visit

It’s a very cold morning. It’s 36 degrees with forecast high of 45. Bev gave me the sweater she brought and will not need. I now can wear 5 layers. My long underwear that I bought for Antarctica is very cozy but I should have brought some warmer things to add on. Today I am warm enough particularly since I have my very warm socks too.

Breakfast was a mix of well labeled foods. There is an array of yogurts, fruits, nuts, jams, breads and pastries as well as omelets on request.
We gathered at 9 am for a walk through a higher section of town than yesterday. Chefchaouen is built on the side of a mountain. The narrow crooked streets are lined with vendors setting up for selling their wares. Abdou told us that many houses have set up extra doors and areas for small shops but very little that is sold in this town is made here.
Of course there are cats everywhere. And plenty of dogs too.

We exited the old town to meet our driver and van for the trip to visit the family in Houmer about 35 minutes away. Overseas adventure travel finds families who are willing to host small groups for a visit. We were encouraged to ask questions of any sort.

Mohammed and his wife live in a house that is on a rocky piece of land that looks out over the RIF mountains. They have expanded their house to have 4 bedrooms that are separate and can be rented through air B & B.

We sat and had mint tea and cookies while the 2 daughters ran in and out curious to see us. Then we walked out to the garden to pick peas that were part of our lunch.

Eggplant and Cauliflower

We had a little walk through the rental area and back into the house to help shell the peas. Lunch was a multi course meal including home brined olives, fava bean soup, homemade bread, cauliflower and eggplant, then vegetable and chicken along with peas and tomatoes all cooked as a tagine. Delicious.
We returned to Chefchaouen to our Riad. Some of us hiked up the hill behind the Riad to a mosque. It was only a mile and a nice trail.

On our return we relaxed a bit then went out for dinner. Nice ending of the day. Mark posed the question about our most interesting trip. We all had lots to say.

Tomorrow we go to an ancient city then lunch at the seaside. The pace is relaxed and the fellow travelers are all interesting.

  1. We’re headed south at the moment, just in time for the snow expected in South Carolina. Since I’m not a fan of layering, a battery-powered heated vest, scarf and gloves are the solution. Where was this technology when we were freezing our behinds off on the chairlift at Stowe?

    1. my high tech long underwear is really good but I think layers of warm clothes work best. I used to have battery powered boot warmers. But at that time they weren’t very long lived. Hope yours lasts all day! Progress.
