Moya announced this morning that we were having breakfast ashore. We ate at the dining hall that had originally been the salmon storage house. Daphne, our waitress, is one of the many people who were born here and come back to work here in the summer. This harbor has been restored with the effort of many previous residents and a land trust. It is a fascinating historical spot.
We did some boat cleaning after breakfast to recover from last night’s party. Ed keeps reminding us that it was his birthday. I am reminding him that my birthday is coming up!
This afternoon we toured the buildings on the island that had had many uses. The pork and molasses storeroom was built in the 1770’s and still stands. The salt store has salt areas in small solid piles on the floor and the beams are all damp. There are many artifacts left out from the days when this was a busy fishing port. We did manage to also get to see Dr Grenfell’s house which is rented to visitors. It is beautifully appointed with a great view too. After over 2 hours we were ready for a drink in the loft, the bar and party room.

We had dinner in the dining room where we had breakfast. The fish stew was a delicious mix of salmon, cod and halibut. Dessert was gingerbread with a crème anglaise. I got the recipe. It was amazing.
It looks like we are going to Hawke bay tomorrow to visit a whaling station. Having seen the one in South Georgia island, I wonder if it will be similar. Interesting.
where should I send your birthday card???
love you
