Our night at anchor was quiet despite the carnival on the beach. Apparently it ended early enough that once we finished dinner, the sounds disappeared.
There was much discussion this morning about where to go next. Ultimately we decided not to go another 45 miles north since that would have forced us to make 125 miles back to port in 3 days. Instead, we had a lovely sail tacking up Conception bay to anchor outside an estuary that led to a colorful town, Mulegé (pronounced mool a hay).

We anchored along the coast just outside the entrance since the estuary is quite shallow. The first challenge was untying the dinghy from the cleat. It was very knotted and wrapped but eventually it was set free. Our dinghy ride to town included taking the shallowest side of the river which caused us to be grounded off and on. There are no accurate charts of the depth so we simply tried one route, backed up, and tried another. We beached the dinghy under a bridge, tied it to some rocks, climbed the embankment and walked into town.

Evan had been to a restaurant he thought was excellent (25+ years ago). We were delighted to find that it had shaded garden tables and excellent food. After our very late lunch, we stopped by a grocery store to restock a few things and then a gas station to add fuel for the dinghy.

The trip back to the boat was easy in the river and very wet once we came into the open water. We returned to the boat and carefully climbed back on board. We planned to look for a quiet spot to anchor for the night. Marcel made his way back down the bay to check out various possibilities. He found a sheltered cove that wasn’t far away that gave us a gentle rocking motion overnight.
