24 September 2022 – Saturday – The Volcanos Appear and The Team Assembles

What a nice surprise to open the shades to my balcony and see sun and a volcano view. This is my first glimpse of a volcano this trip. The town is ringed with them but it has been too foggy and cloudy to see anything. Nancy and I had breakfast at the little restaurant next to the hotel. We agreed that it was the best meal we had so far! It was poached eggs in a tomato vegetable sauce with avocado slices and tortillas. Yum!

I went back into the square to buy a few beaded items to give to the mission for their fundraising. I am adding photos of families who started their 9+ hour journey yesterday to reach us. We are excited to help them. We will screen over 100 patients who are waiting for surgery. The organization has a Facebook page if you want to see what we do. It is HUGS Foundation Inc.

Carolina, a nurse I met last year who is Colombian and is fully bilingual, met me at my hotel where we both had massages. It’s important to get loose before entering the week long work ahead.

I moved to the hotel that we use for the mission. The taxi ride was in a car with a taped inner liner and no opening door handle on one side. Carolina and I settled in to wait for much of the team to arrive. Carolina had come from LA so she arrived at 6am today.

We met, hugged got settled and ventured out into town. It was raining off and on so we decided to stop at Frida’s, a great place for mezcal margaritas, and have a drink. Since the rain kept up, we stayed for dinner. We walked home in the pouring rain. The hair dryer helps with wet pants legs and sneakers.

Tomorrow is a big day. Time to finish getting organized and get some sleep.

    1. It is a special thing to do. These kids have no access to the kind of care we offer and we do it for free. I get more out of it than they do.
