05 August 2022 – Friday – Shore Events in St. John’s

The yacht club had organized a bus to show us the sights in the area with visits to some great highlights. We assembled, sort of, around 8:30. We left a bit after 9 and were immediately told that 4 people hadn’t gotten to the bus in time. They got brought out by car to a nearby spot where the bus had stopped. Then we were off to St John’s to see government house, a cathedral and a museum called The Rooms. The Rooms was built on the site of an old fort that overlooked the harbor. The Rooms name refers to fishing rooms that were used for processing the catch. The view from the top floor is a magnificent harbor view

The museum is divided into 2 sides; one side is an art museum and the other is a historical museum. We had a short introduction by a docent then we were set free to wander. Our allotted time of about an hour and a half wasn’t nearly enough.

We then drove by some interesting parts of St John’s on our way to Quidi Vidi which was a repeat of Thursday’s trip except this time we went to the popular Quidi Vidi microbrewery for beers and bar food. After lunch we were able to visit the craft center and help the local economy.

Our final stop was going to be Signal Hill but some of us wanted to visit the Geo center. So my group chose the Geo center since we have been seeing some beautiful rock structures on our travels. It turn out that Newfoundland is one of the oldest rock areas on earth the museum is cut into the rock that is Signal hill. It reminded me of the museum of natural history in NYC but on a smaller scale. I wish I had taken a course in geology. So many rocks!!!

We returned to the yacht club for a buffet dinner and karaoke. My Vietnam karaoke experience has given me lots of material. Sorry no record deals yet. Ha. It was a late night and lots of fun.
