17 July 2022 – Sunday – Enroute St. John’s,

Days at sea are mostly quiet days of watch standing, often while reading, because there is very little traffic around. Friendship 4 is a sturdy boat taking us along at an average of 8 knots which works out to be approximately 8.8 mph. We are using about 3 gallons of diesel per hour. We could go faster at the expense of greater fuel consumption. It feels like we are going fast enough on the water…but try driving your car at 8-9 mph onland and it will seem incredibly slow.

The day was mostly sunny with some high overcast. Not much more to report. We stand watch, nap and eat meals. We mark our progress on the chart every 24 hours. Based on our projections, we are just about on time for our Tuesday late morning arrival at the Royal Newfoundland yacht club just past St John. I have been there once before with Dan Coit. It’s a sweet spot where our cruise will end with a “gala” dinner.
No photos at sea. Not much to see except water and sky.

  1. Hi Anne!! Sounds like this is much less eventful than the Bermuda trip. Glad to hear you are relaxing and able to enjoy it. I’ve never been to Newfoundland but i have seen Come From Away- does that count? Enjoying the updates. Photos when you can. I’m back from Chicago and had my last PT today. I saw Dave play about 5 minutes from here and he and Patti are engaged!! Wedding is super small (32 people) in a friend’s backyard- but he invited Barb and me. August 27. They are very excited- well, as excited as he gets. – Smooth sailing!-Debbie
