16 July 2022 – Saturday – Halifax and Underway for St. John’s, Newfoundland

We had a delicious dinner last night with Bob and Diane Royal, Mark and Bev’s friends whose condo on the ARM we anchored near. Bob is in the fisheries business so he cooked the last of his Russian Cod which he said is the best there is. Diane made a salad nicoise as a base for the fish. It’s my personal favorite summer meal. We went back to Friendship for a solid night’s sleep before heading out.

We awoke to a perfect sunny day. Blueberry waffles started us off after which we weighed anchor and headed for the fuel dock. Our next leg to Newfoundland is 554 nautical miles so we needed to make sure we topped up the tanks.

Our trip out of Halifax harbor was scenic and quite pleasant in stark contrast to our densely foggy approach.

We had a very typical day at sea. We saw very few other vessels. The birds flew around us as we tried to identify them. No whales or dolphins joined us. The seas were coming at us from the quarter(the side) so we had lots of rolling despite our stabilizer system. We learned how ineffective some of our stowage was as pots, pans and jars spilled out of their drawers and cupboards. Mark was busy devising ways to keep things in place. There will be several winter projects for him to do to improve storage. For now, we have everything secured, we hope.
We have a 4 hour on/4 hour off watch system. It allows segmented and sometimes very interrupted sleep but it all works out over the day with naps required.

Tomorrow should be more of the same with perhaps less rolling. We shall see.
