30 September 2021 – Thursday – Day 4

Today we flew through 5 cases. We started with the usual scrubs. There is a wide variety of choices but I think that today lots of people chose maroon.

Maroon is the Choice

We went to get COVID tested by crossing the indoor basketball, laundry, parking lot. Thankfully we were all negative.

Second stage cases were our project for the day. The implanted cartilage is lifted off the skull using a piece of “banked” cartilage that was left over from the first operation and placed under the skin of the original chest incision. The lifted ear needs extra skin that is taken from the site of the original cartilage removal. The whole procedure takes about 90 minutes. It looks messy, but in the end it should look like a pretty nice ear. And it has definition to hold glasses.

Once the OR finished, we met back at the hotel to go out for a steakhouse dinner. It’s a popular local meal. We shared two trays of meat and shrimp with several side sauces. Nice group photo of happy and exhausted people !
One of our group had eaten earlier so she was back at the hotel in time to take a photo of the volcano eruption. I am told this happens regularly but does not threaten the area with lava. I guess it’s ok to go to sleep.
Tomorrow is our last work day. We have a full team dinner tomorrow night then back to the airport and home on Saturday. The time has flown. I know that several new people are totally hooked. That’s great.
Time for bed now.

  1. You would like grand in maroon! We continue to be so moved by what you and the team are doing. Really making a difference. By the way, things are just fine in your apartment! Should we cool some Champaingn for your late night return?
