26 September 2021 – Sunday – Antigua

We had a busy morning today seeing all the prospective patients that we will take care of this week. I wasn’t able to take photos because it requires consent. We saw a mix of patients ranging from 10 years old to 28. Some are having their first stage of surgery and others are having a second stage or relatively repair of a simple problem.

I will describe the surgery when I can show photos from the OR where it isn’t possible to identify the patient so consent is not an issue.

This afternoon we were able to wander around Antigua and visit a local market. They sell everything from beautiful woven or embroidered pieces to paintings, shoes, belts, bags, and electronics. Prices are negotiable.

We stopped at a wine bar then went on to a fun restaurant, Frida’s. They had excellent food and fabulous mezcal margaritas. The big drink mugs were included in the price of the drink. It was definitely worth it.

Tomorrow we start in the OR. Our group has quickly become friends. We talked tonight about how great this week will be. Most of the group have not been here before so those of us who know our way around have been the guides both in the OR and in town.
I am excited to get going. We will be a great team. We are off and running at 7 am tomorrow.
