06 March 2026 – Friday – Settling in Hoi An, Vietnam

We went to sleep around 12:30 am and woke about 5:45 which was amazing. We slowly got ready for breakfast. Then we enjoyed a very leisurely meal with excellent fruit and Vietnamese treats. We made our way to the lake in the middle of town afterwards.

We wandered the streets in search of interesting places. I remembered the art gallery where I had bought some pieces before. We walked in and came across several of our team. We made plans to meet again for dinner and looked at some interesting art pieces.

After looking in a variety of shops, it was time for lunch. We located a lovely spot that overlooked a huge church. We were alone for most of lunch which made our spot even nicer. We shared a bahn mi sandwich and a series of spring rolls.
After lunch we decided to visit the church. It had a beautiful black and white outside that was probably due to soot from air pollution. The interior was clean but not anything like Sicily where I had seen some spectacular spots.

We moved on to complete our circumnavigation of the lake and return to our hotel.
We wandered the local streets until it was time to meet for dinner. There was a park very nearby that had an interesting tree sculpture. The plaque said something about recycling a tree that had been blown over.

We walked to dinner at the Metropole hotel. It’s across the street from our hotel. It’s a charming spot filled with wealthy international people. I ordered a delicious spicy noodle dish. I am finally succumbing to jet lag. Time to get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a busy day of seeing patients.
