12 February 2026 – Thursday – To Malta

It looks like it will be raining everywhere we go for the rest of the trip. At least it’s not snow!  We arrived at the airport at 6:30 for our 8:50 flight. I was able to find a lounge right near our gate that was open and allowed me to bring a guest. Patricia and I settled in for cappuccino and a tiny croissant sandwich with prosciutto and parmigiano. A few others from our group showed up later. They had been bragging last night about going to the lounge. They asked how we got in. Same way you did, I replied. No reason to advertise my plans.
We left the lounge to board our plane. Italians don’t really understand lines so they push ahead. It’s always interesting. We boarded the plane and were packed like sardines. There is one flight per day from Catania to Malta.

The flight takes a little more than 20 minutes. Then we figured we would try a bus into town. It was 3 Euros. It dropped us at the entrance to the city of Valletta which is tiny. We walked through the streets to our hotel. Most streets are pedestrian so we were glad that we had decided to walk. It turned out that our hotel is on a street that allows cars. Good to know for our 3:30am departure on Sunday morning.

This afternoon after a quick lunch of pizza, we took a 3 hour walking tour of Valletta. Our guide was Maltese and she was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Malta and its many invaders. We enjoyed everything from the outside with reference to places to visit later. At one point we had a downpour followed by hail. Luckily we took cover in a walkway that was part of a food court. It didn’t last long.

We walked back to our hotel to learn that we had a dinner reservation and a room that was ready. It’s been a long day. We opened a bottle of wine that was in our room ….for a price…and relaxed. Dinner was nearby at a restaurant that specializes in rabbit and horse meat. We chose the rabbit and had a delicious meal of salad followed by rabbit pasta. We have a long day tomorrow so we are getting ready for an early bedtime. Gozo a small island, is our plan.
