20 July 2025 – Sunday – On the water to Tobermory, Scotland

We left Oban this morning to sail to Tobermory on the isle of Mull. We had to announce our departure on the radio because the exit channel from Oban is a busy ferry route. They have precedence since they are commercial ships and need to make a timely schedule.

We decided to sail since there was wind. We had a nice sail for a short while but as we moved between 2 land masses, the wind died. Ultimately, we decided to motor the rest of the way.

We arrived in Tobermory and had tuna salad for lunch. Then we launched the dinghy to go to town. The town is an adorable spot with pastel colored houses lining the harbor. I visited the local distillery to get a scotch glass and moved on to various souvenir shops and ultimately a pub. Must try beer all over the place. It was too early for Scotch.
We returned to the boat briefly before running back to town for showers and some last minute shopping to top up supplies.

Kathleen and I picked up our dinner guests on the dock as we returned from our shopping. They are an interesting couple who live part time in Mull and in Los Angeles. He is Scottish and she is American. They know Doug and Dale through their publishing activity for a Pacific crossing guide. Doug has published many guides for our group covering far away places.

We had a lively discussion about sailing while we enjoyed a tasty dinner of chicken, couscous and salad.

It’s time for bed now. Early day tomorrow.
