I arrived at JFK last night at 6 pm. I zoomed through security and parked myself in the Delta One lounge to wait for my flight boarding at 8;25p. JFK has been so crazy with traffic and construction that it was best to arrive early.
The flight was easy with a nice pillow, blanket and lie flat seat. The time difference is 5 hours. We landed at 9:10am which seemed civilized.
Immigration consisted of placing my passport in a scanner and having my picture taken. There were no stamps or person to ask questions. I am beginning to wonder why I opted for the 50 page passport when I renewed it last year. But some places do still stamp the passport or paste in a full page visa so I guess it’s still worth it.
Luggage delivery reminded me that most people seem to come to Scotland to golf. The initial delivery on the carousel was golf bags. My priority ticketed bag seemed to be in the low priority group of late delivery. I can’t complain. It arrived!
My next move was to find the bus stop to take me to the Glasgow bus station. I had already bought a ticket. The ride takes about an hour. It was easy. I arrived at the station and sat inside waiting for Kathleen. She arrived about 10 minutes before the bus to Oban was to depart. We ran out and asked the bus driver if we could get on. Yes we could and we did. It cost about $32 for the 3 hour trip with many stops. We went along numerous lochs (lakes) and saw lots of cows and sheep. It’s very green here. It rains a lot!
We arrived in Oban with about 40 minutes to wait for the water taxi to Kerrera. So we split a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich which was our first real meal of the day.
Of course it began to rain as we were ready to walk to the water taxi which is a small boat that holds 12 passengers. Luckily, we were able to squeeze inside the tiny cabin because others chose to stay outside.
Bill Strassberg, our host, met us on the dock and helped us bring our gear to his very beautiful boat, Visions of Johanna.
We got settled, had dinner and are ready for a good night of sleep. Tomorrow we shop for perishables. No other port has any sort of market.
