19 June 2025 – Thursday – Day 4 in the OR

The sun was coming out as we walked to the hospital this morning. It’s been overcast and raining most days so it was a nice change. There is a park across from the hospital entrance where people set up little stools and eat on the grass when the weather allows.

As we entered the hospital, the staff was busy decorating the floor with pine needles and colored wood chips. A Corpus Christi celebration is planned today with a parade. Apparently Antigua is known for its celebrations so it was going to be a fun thing inside the hospital which is actually an old mission. Starting at 11:00 we went out into the hallway to observe. They were lighting smoke candles and ringing bells. Then I heard singing coming down the hall. There were many small children dressed as angels who were a major part of the parade. I wasn’t able to find out exactly what this was about but it was fun to watch.

The afternoon went along slowly. One of our anesthesia doctors is now ill and receiving antibiotics and IV fluids. Luckily, there is only one more short day in the OR.

I was the late person tonight. Both late rooms ended around 8 pm. We were able to have the  2 patients ready to go quickly so that we could meet our team at a delicious steak restaurant very close to our hotel. We had a good dinner and walked a short distance to get back to the hotel. Tomorrow we do little cases and pack up valuable supplies that need to return to the USA. Then we get ready for our final dinner together. Another really gratifying and fun week.
Time for bed.
