15 June 2025 – Sunday – Getting Ready for First Surgeries

We began with breakfast starting at 6:15. Our group gathered for introductory information and meeting everyone before we left for the 5 minute walk to the hospital. We then had a quick group photo in front of the hospital before going inside to be given a painful lecture about rules with simultaneous English translation followed by a description of the new computer system.

We then split up to our various spots needed to get ready for tomorrow. The anesthesia nurses set up their machines and equipment. Recovery room arranged gifts for kids and organized post operative medical doses. Surgeons and anesthesia doctors, including me, went to see patients. The first hour was frustrating because the computer system was not set up with all patient names needed for information entry. Once we got things running, it was simply a matter of filling out paper forms, a computer form, questioning each patient and doing an exam. It felt like the day was too long by lunchtime. I had 2 excellent translators with me who helped with the process. I recognized many patients from previous years. They return for second stage repair or even a small cosmetic improvement. Many patients travel 8-10 hours by bus to see us.

I asked to take photographs with a few patients. They are always ready to smile for us. It’s really sweet. Of course I saw a few patients who would be challenging because of their very misshapen anatomy that can be part of their syndrome. But we can usually deal with them carefully and safely.

All dressed up for an important day
I’m Ready !!

It began to rain as I walked back from the hospital. The evening rain is typical here. A group of us met in the bar before going to dinner. Eight of us went to a local spot that pleased everyone. Pizza and burgers were fine.

Tomorrow will be a busy day getting started. There are lots of new people with us but everyone knows their job. Time to sleep.
