What a fun day.
We started at a silversmith shop that had many beautiful handmade pieces. We met the master smith who showed us a few techniques. Then we found some very lovely pieces in the shop.
We moved onto the wharf to see the boats and a fish market in the port. What a crazy place filled with boats where they begin to fish late at night and return in the early morning to sell their catch. We shopped for our extremely fresh fish to eat for lunch. We bought fish at two stalls and had our chef who arrived on his bicycle to pick it up to have it ready to cook for lunch.
We moved on to a wood shop that had pieces that are set with inlay. They also had some fun magic boxes that needed solving. The wood is a special burled cedar found only in Morocco.
We moved onto a beautiful place that was the high point filled with cannons. There are so many rocks close to shore that it is hard to imagine anyone hoping to attack.
We returned to the town to have lunch. Our fish was all being prepared at a restaurant that specializes in bring it and we will put it together with vegetables and cook it. Amazing.
After lunch we went our separate ways. Maria and I went back to the art gallery for her to buy the door we had seen the day before. It’s a very special piece. I bought a tall beaded figure that is from the Zulu tribe in southern afar. We went on shopping, returning to the wood store to buy a few more pieces. We called Abdou to pick us up at the gate. It’s a long walk back to our hotel.
After celebrating our purchases in the hotel bar, we got ready for a dinner where we watched the sunset and heard 2 young men performing gnaouan music which we had heard when we were out at the desert camp.
They were able to do so much with just 2 of them singing, using castanets, and foot stomping. It was a good ending to our day.
