23 July 2024 -Tuesday – Fogo Island

We are on a dock at Fogo island. The plan was to go hike around this morning then visit the Fogo inn. Google the inn. It’s spectacular!

But…boats always have crazy problems. There are a million jellyfish in the harbor. This morning the generator stopped working and we thought it was jelly fish. But it turns out that the through hull which brings cooling water in for the generator is clogged by something that can’t be removed. The work around after much trial and error is to hook up the generator to a spare through hull fitting. Luckily, Max has a friend, Terry who has been traveling along with us on his 70 ft sailboat. Terry’s business has been aluminum manufacturer for boats. He has lots of supplies on his boat.

Finally the work around worked! Mia and I cooked breakfast on the stove an Max’s boat. We were all hungry at 12:30. There was much more to do to plan for our next trip to Bonavista. We needed fuel and water and boat cleaning. Moya sent me and Mia to visit the island while she dealt with the boat. We hitched a ride to the other side of the island.

Mia and I walked along the shore and saw a stunning house that is one of many set up for artists to work. The windows in the house face the ocean. It’s a spectacular spot. We then hitched a ride to the ice cream store and wandered to a quilt store while we waited to be picked up. Moya said 30 minutes but it was more like 90 minutes.

We came back to the boat, changed our clothes and got ready to go to the Fogo inn for cocktails and dinner. We were picked up and brought to the inn where we sat at the bar for some fun cocktails. They serve local sourced items so there aren’t any drinks with citrus. My drink was served in a beautiful tea cup which I was asked to choose.

An Interesting Cocktail

We met Zita who put the whole Fogo project together. She is originally from Fogo. She has had a very interesting life in IT in the US then made her way back here to start the Inn. The whole community is involved in the inn as workers and craftspeople. It’s quite unique  Apparently Battle harbor was the inspiration. Zita’s next project is to connect Newfoundland with New York. She has found many connections already exist and she wants to increase the interest in her home country. I offered to take her to the New York yacht club when she’s in town. She accepted!!

Dinner was a tasting menu with almost all locally sourced foods. It was delicious. We watched the sunset from our corner table. Then we were taken back to the boat to get ready for an early departure for about a 78 mile trip to Bonavista.

  1. Wish I were younger and go venture to the Fogo Inn. Your adventures are my breakfast time reading here in Lenox and I love it. Look forward to lunch in the fall to hear even more.
