19 July 2024 – Friday – Labrador

Labrador is known for flies in the summer. I neglected to mention that all those who went ashore to see the decaying whale facility were beset with a million flies and some annoying bites.

We left Hawke harbor around 6 am to get to Square harbor for a late breakfast. Despite the forecast for sun, it was foggy….again. I began to fear that I would never actually get to see Labrador.

We approached Square island harbor in dense fog through a narrow cut between two rocky islands. It was a bit rough at the entrance but then we were in a calm and very protected harbor. As we approached the harbor, still shrouded in light fog, we saw a bunch of dogs on one of the rocky islands. They seemed eager to see us.

Lots of Fog

We tied up in the harbor next to Sugar, Max’s boat. We found out that the dog owner lets his dogs run on the island where they don’t need to be chained up and he goes to feed them each day. Apparently the dogs really love the freedom.

Starting to see the Real Labrador

Mia and I made breakfast for the 2 boats. We made tomato, onion and cheese sautéed with scrambled eggs, cinnamon rolls, and Max brought baked beans. Yum. The sun was trying hard to come out as we left the harbor headed back to Battle harbor. But the sun above didn’t affect the dense fog around us.

Moya and I took our position on the flying bridge since it was almost warm from the sun above. After a while the sky darkened and the temperature dropped. We went inside to steer and within minutes it poured rain and the wind turned to northeast. After the storm passed, the fog disappeared and the sun appeared with blue sky. Finally I saw Labrador!!

I went to the galley to make guacamole as we were approaching Battle harbor. When I came back to the salon, fog and rain had returned. We arrived at 4:30 pm to our dock space from yesterday, tied up and came inside for beers.

Finally a good view of Labrador

Dinner at 6 was pork with molasses glaze, turnips and sauerkraut. Dessert was rhubarb crumble. The rhubarb grows on the island. It was all delicious.

Shower after dinner felt great. Pay the bill and get ready for a very early departure tomorrow morning to cross the strait of belle isle again while the weather is good. I am going with Max so that he won’t be alone going for about 8 hours to St Anthony
