16 June 2024 – Tuesday – To Battle Harbor

Cozy night on board the Moya C. I was given the salon bed which is the kitchen table lowered between 2 benches and covered with a padded mattress topper ( no mattress) then sheets and a quilt.

This morning I found out we had Starlink on board so I can send my messages while the system is up and running. Very nice!

Ed who is a crew with us and long time friend of Moya announced that it’s his birthday today. Since we needed a few things from the nearby market, Moya asked me to buy a birthday cake, candles and a card. Ed was planning to travel with Max today for the long trip across the straits of Belle Isle. So we were able to hide the cake from him.

We had scrambled eggs, toast and  coffee for breakfast. No lunch planned for the crossing. No problem!

The straits of Belle isle are at the outflow of the St Lawrence seaway. It is a significant body of water with enormous flow. I had visions of the trip in the past across the Cabot Strait which runs between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. It’s a miserable crossing. But with very little wind today and a following sea we are zooming along without much rock and roll.

The day was quite good because the tide gave us a push and there wasn’t much wind. So we made really good time. Travel through the strait was rolling but very acceptable. The trip through the cut into battle harbor was terrifying in the fog but we were suddenly there. I suggested that Mark take a different route that would be wider and deeper when he comes with Friendship 4 next summer.

Quite a Terrifying Entry

The harbor is small and very welcoming. As is typical for Newfoundland and Labrador, everyone may turn out to catch your lines to tie up. We met practically all the locals.

One of the few Battle Harbor Buildings still in use

It is Ed’s birthday today. We ended up having a big party on board with a few other sailors. Quite fun. Time to go to bed. Hiking and a tour of the little harbor buildings tomorrow.
