15 July 2024- Monday

Moya called last night to tell me that she will definitely be here today. She then called back to tell me that she had arranged for me to join a group of sailors who were going out by taxi to L’anse aux Meadows, a Viking site. That way I would be busy all morning while the boats made their way here. Sounds good. The site is supposed to be very interesting.

So I went to the Viking site. Moya had hooked me up with the group. They were 4 guys who work on boats in Halifax. We went out with a guide to see the area. It reminded me of Skara Brae in Scotland, another Viking site that was also covered with peat. Much was discovered by archaeologists including that they had mined small amounts of iron probably to fix their boats. The Vikings didn’t stay probably because the site wasn’t good for farming or cattle.

I came back into town to visit Dr Grenfell’s house and hike the trail above it. I decided to try out the local brewery which overlooks the harbor. The group should arrive around 3 pm. Fried pickles go well with beer.

I needed to do a few boat errands before Moya  arrived. So I called Tony to help. He gathered  up a variety of supplies   Then we set off to look for the boats from a high point. Somehow we missed them but got a text saying they were coming in. It was almost 4pm. They came into the dock and got tied up with our help.

We all had beers at the micro brewery and went out to dinner at the lighthouse restaurant.  Then we had a bit of boat repair before bed since Moya had a leak in her cooling system.

Tomorrow we cross the strait of belle isle which we hope will be a quiet passage.
