15 April 2024 – Monday – Embarking on our River Cruise Ship – AMAMora

Arrived at the Rembrandt house just as the rain began and the museum opened. The house was where Rembrandt lived in his early and very successful years. He was a well known and sought after as an artist. He married Saskia with whom he had a very loving relationship according to history. He had many patrons who sought his work. But then he was a major collector of all sorts of pieces including armor, shells, feather pieces and works of other artists. Despite his success he was unable to sustain his lifestyle due to his constant collections. Apparently he outspent his income. He lost the house and its contents. But what we saw was a reconstruction based on the recorded sale of his property. It was a history lesson.

We saw many paintings by his pupils. But clearly Rembrandt had a different style and a mastery of his art. Only a few etchings of his were on view and very protected.

After the museum we went back towards our hotel for lunch and waited for our taxi to take us to the pickup location to take us to the boat. In the meantime, the sky opened and we had a thunderstorm. We met up with our group, walked to a bus, and drove about an hour to the port where we boarded AMAMora, our boat for the trip. We got situated, had our introduction and ate a very nice meal. The waves crashed against the hull as we ate. We expect the weather to improve tomorrow.
