20 June 2023 – Tuesday – Day TWO

It poured rain last night. We had a fun eating at a restaurant called Por Que Non? We squeezed into an upstairs platform reached by climbing narrow stairs with a rope handrail. It felt like being on a boat. I was comfortable but others felt nervous particularly on the way back down after a few drinks. We all got down and back to the hotel in a downpour which is typical here.

This morning was somewhat better organized for the start. We had 3 rhinoplasty rooms and one microtia(ear surgery) as scheduled for each day. Not much to say until this afternoon, a patient was almost ready for transfer to the floor when the nurse caring for him noticed a very tense swollen area around where a small amount of rib had been harvested to help with the nasal architecture. The surgeon was informed. The swelling was increasing as we watched. The surgeon removed the dressing and opened the wound to investigate. It was clear that the patient needed a return to the OR for wound exploration. As one room ended, we took the bleeding patient into that room and under local anesthesia the surgeon located the problem which was a small bleeding vessel. Cautery, irrigation and closure went quickly. The patient was returned to recovery and remained stable. So the day ended with a little excitement.
We had dinner at a Thai restaurant that had great food and drinks. One of the surgeons brought his nephew along and the nephew is a professional pianist/composer. We went to the restaurant next door to him him play for a while. Then to bed.
