27 September 2022 – Tuesday – A Very Busy Day

We had 2 first stage operations scheduled in each of the 3 rooms doing microtia ear cases. Scott Thompson, the head surgeon in my room, is the fastest one. We finished around 6:15. The other rooms finished closer to 7 pm with one room that ended at 8.30. These days can be very long.

Both cases were pretty standard. I have included some photos of one. After I finished my case I need to cover the recovery room so that the person in the longest room could be sent home by Nancy, the other anesthesiologist. We are a bit short staffed this week. We usually have 3 nurse anesthetists and 2 anesthesiologists but one of our nurse anesthetists had liver surgery a week before the mission. Things are tight.

Once things calmed down, we had made a reservation for dinner at a place, Por Que No? A few of us went there in the rain but it was only a few blocks. The place is tiny and has a very funky 60’s look. We climbed up steep stairs with a loose rope hand rail to find another group of ours already eating there. We took their advice on what to order. It tasted as good as it looked. We all made it back before 9:30 which seems to be bedtime around here. Big day tomorrow with a very difficult airway case.
