02 September 2022 – Friday – Cape Negro to Yarmouth

We left Port Negro around 8:30 to pick up the bay of Fundy current and round cape Sable. It was a beautiful sunny day with some wind and slightly choppy seas. There are many lighthouses surrounding the cape. It is a dangerous area where huge amounts of water interface and cause great turbulence. As we turned out of the harbor entrance we could easily see the Cape Sable lighthouse in the distance about 15+ miles away. Since it is most often foggy in this area, it was a treat to see the lighthouse in the sunlight. As we drew closer there was a great deal of wave action on the surface. The powerful currents of the Gulf of Maine, Newfoundland and Bay of Fundy cause some areas to have big waves. Luckily the current that pushed us along in the direction we were going got us through those areas quickly.

We continued up the west coast of Nova Scotia heading for Yarmouth. We navigated a tricky passage named “the schooner passage” that zig zagged through some shallow rocky spots. It allowed us to have a shortened trip rather than going around the outside track.

It was quite rough and lumpy for the rest of the trip which was only about an hour to reach Falmouth. Yarmouth is a large commercial fishing port and stop for the ferry from Bar Harbor. We had a dock reservation in town. Our plan is to leave tomorrow at 4 am to reach the US borderand all the lobster pots by daylight. We will continue on to Northeast harbor in Maine to spend a night on a mooring.

Yarmouth Harbor

There is a big tidal variation in Yarmouth. The docks have an interesting set of steps that open up an the tide drops. We took a little walk through town to look around. It seemed deserted. Mark said it has always been like that when he and Bev have been here in the past. It will wake up when the ferry arrives.

Our dinner in a dockside restaurant was fun. The place was packed. So the town has a life! Off to sleep to prepare for 4 am. —
