01 September 2022 – Thursday – Lunenburg to Cape Negro

We had a long day of travel down the eastern coast of Nova Scotia. Luckily the seas which had been rough from last night’s storm were calmed as we went along. It seems like a trivial distance for a car but 74.8 miles is a BIG day on the water going at an average of 8 knots. We left Lunenberg around 7 am and arrived at our anchorage around 5:45 pm.

Long days of sea travel on a power boat are usually pretty routine. We rotate which 2 people sit at the helm and look for wildlife. We did see a whale dive quite close to us as we passed Port Mouton (pronounced Muh-toon). Apparently there was a ship in the 1800’s that lost a sheep overboard in this location! Funny pronunciation for the French spelling. On the way up we had seen many whales around the same location. But they are likely migrating now to different places.

We made pappardelle with sausage, peppers and onions for dinner. It’s getting chilly. I did not win any of the after dinner matches of Rummikub. It’s competitive!

We plan to go around Cape Sable in the morning to get to Yarmouth. The current is part of the Bay of Fundy which has extremely powerful tides. It is important to go with the current when possible or there can be 5 knots or more against you. We plan to leave at 8 am. Then we get a “free ride” from the power of the tides.
