20 August 2022 – Saturday – Isle Aux Mort

We knew there was a chance of seeing a caribou in Grand Bruit. The locals told us he wandered into to town most days. We had seen him briefly the night before. I got on the dock as Mark told me that the caribou was just across a small inlet and grazing on a part of the old town that was no longer connected by a bridge over an inlet. I was able to watch him as he turned back towards the main town area where I stood. He trotted by me within about 50 feet clearly unafraid. He walked up the path into town and crossed the bridge over the waterfall. He owns the turf.

We left for Isles aux Morts around 10am. It was a bouncy 30 mile trip with lots of wind and waves until we turned into the harbor. We tied up at the town dock with the help of one of the curious locals. Mark asked a few questions about what was open in town but our local guy didn’t seem to know much. Mark decided that we should plan to leave tonight to cross the Cabot strait due to favorable conditions.

We took a short walk into town to find that the local bar wasn’t open and the museum had been closed for a few years because the person who tended it had died. The museum had been a tribute to a local young woman, Ann Harvey, who had twice rowed out with her Newfoundland dog and rescued sailors from shipwrecks along the shore. We returned to have dinner on board before leaving for Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Our Newfoundland adventure was ending but I think I might come back by car to see more someday.
We are now underway and bucking through the waves towards Baddeck. I doubt there will be much sleep tonight.
