The south coast of Newfoundland is very sparsely populated with many resettlement areas and a few resilient folks who come back to those spots in the summer. It’s easy to see why people keep returning for the natural beauty. In many places there are huge waterfalls.
I had been to Hare bay before in 2017. I remembered it as one of the very spectacular places to stop. The hidden entrance opens into a long cliff lined passage with multiple waterfalls and rock faces dotted with pines. We made our way up the fjord to anchor in the northwest arm behind sandy point. After a quick lunch, we planned a dinghy ride to climb the Morgan brook waterfalls on the other arm of the water. There we could hike up along an enormous waterfall. We found a good flat rock to use for landing and tied up on a few trees. We made our way along the water’s edge to the side of the waterfalls that was not wet but clearly was a path for water when there was more flow. The rocks were surprisingly easy to scale because they were rough granite. We climbed to a ridge stopping for photos along the way. Nancy, Maggie and I stopped just before the feeding river at the top because the path was difficult. Mark and Charlie went a bit further. The amount of water pouring out was noisy and impressive. As we began to drop back down, the black flies started torturing us. The look like tiny gnats but they bite and leave big itchy bumps!!! The photos can’t really give you a sense of the panorama and roar of the water but I took them to try to show the beauty.

We had a slow ride back to the boat so that we could investigate the shoreline. The rocks, trees and mosses are all different patterns. We returned to the boat to pick up Bev for a dinghy ride around the Northwest arm where we had anchored. There were a few houses, several waterfalls and some shallow areas where the water was incredibly clear. Although the water outside Hare bay is ocean water, the water inside and up stream has no discernible salty taste.

We returned to the boat for a tasty grilled halibut dinner and another beautiful sunset.
