15 August 2022 – Monday – Back to Newfoundland

We weren’t sure how long it would take to check back into Canada so we got an early start. We were underway by 0630 (St Pierre time). The wind was light and the seas were calm so it was easy going.

We arrived in Fortune, Newfoundland around 9:30 AM. The ferry from St Pierre arrived just before us so we ended up waiting 1 ½ hours until everyone on the ferry and the cars all cleared customs. No problem. Our check in only took 15 minutes for the 6 of us and the boat. The Canadian officials could not have been nicer.

F4 Docked in Fortune Awaiting Clearance from Canadian Customs & Immigration

We left Fortune and went 3 hours north to Jerseyman’s Bay. This is a nice little harbor that at one time had a thriving fishing community. The collapse of the cod industry led to the government shutting down this outpost. There are now only 3 summer cabins left but they are quite nicely maintained. As is typical for these shutdown outpost villages, the cemetery is also maintained. There’s a lot of family history.

F4 Anchored in Jerseynan’s Harbor

The harbor is has two medium sized wrecks of steel ships. One is upright and almost entirely out of the water. This was clearly a fishing vessel about 60 feet long. The other is on its side and mostly submerged. It appears to be a 100 foot vessel of some sort, perhaps a coastal freighter. We launched the tender and did an exploration of the harbor with the tender.

Wrecked Fishing Boat

We returned to Friendship 4 and made a plan for the next week along the south coast of Newfoundland. There are so many places you can go that it is hard to limit yourself. But not to worry, we’ll have a good time.

I’m As always, we had a great dinner and very nice evening onboard.
