12 August 2022 – Friday – On to FRANCE !

We left Burin at 7:30 bound for France. The islands of St Pierre and Miquelon belong to France which is very far away. France supports the islands financially so that every child is guaranteed education in France proper. St Pierre has a nice harbor with ferry activity and numerous small shops. The real draw is the patisseries where one can buy all sorts of French pastries and breads.

We arrived at about 1:30 and docked easily. Then we were visited by immigration followed by customs. We helped two other CCA boats who had been with the cruise tie up at the dock. We then went to the tourist information center for help with dinner reservations and information about the town. Having been here in 2017, I found it rather diminished with fewer stores and many were closed. I think that COVID has caused great hardship everywhere.
We walked around the harbor to our dinner spot as it began drizzling. Dinner was delicious. Some had lamb shanks over couscous and others had duck breast. The chefs is Tunisian so the spices were interesting.
As we walked home, it began to pour rain. Luckily we had all worn foul weather jackets. There was a big band concert on the dock featuring songs from U2. The place was packed with local young folks. Apparently it lasted until 4 am. We were all asleep long before.
