04 August 2022 – Thursday – Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club & St. John’s Area Tours

We had been told that the Mallard Restaurant in Quidi Vidi was a great place to go. The only reservation we could get that fit into our schedule was for Thursday lunch. We had already been offered a loaner car from Gary and Ruthanne so we were ready to go. People in Newfoundland are incredibly generous. The car was offered without our ever asking for one!

Quidi Vidi is a very old part of St. John’s. It has a pond that is the site of the oldest boating race in North America, a rowing race. Race day is a holiday so that everyone can attend the race. However the race is weather dependent. It was supposed to be held on Wednesday but was canceled due to high winds. It was a bit confusing to figure out what was open since the holiday was Wednesday. The restaurant was open but all the local businesses were closed.

The Mallard is a very old house that has low ceilings, wide board floors and fireplaces. We ordered lunch which was ok except for Bev’s choice of halibut cheeks which she really enjoyed. We had hoped to visit a large building with crafts for sale but it was closed. We knew we would be back the next day with our group so we weren’t too disappointed.

We made our way back to the yacht club in time for Irish pub night which included beer and singing. My knowledge of Irish songs is pretty limited. It was fun entertainment with a singer and a squeeze box playe
