30 July 2022 – Saturday – Trinity

We started the day with a historical walking tour of Trinity. It had been a major cod and salmon fishing port with exports to England, Europe, the Caribbean and elsewhere. The merchants who lived here were extremely wealthy. But as salt cod was less needed due to refrigeration and then cod fishing was banned due to decimation of the population, the town has shrunk to a tourist spot. The whole fishing industry has disappeared in many parts of Newfoundland. Our guide also explained that many foreigners have bought homes so that locals can no longer afford to buy houses. It happens everywhere.

We departed for a ride in a few borrowed cars and went to a fun micro brewery for beer and lunch. The day was misty and foggy so it was an easy choice.

Our evening activities included a cook it yourself barbecue at the dock restaurant. We were each given a steak, seasoning and barbecue sauce. We were given tongs to handle the meat. They had put out about 8 barrels of lighted charcoal with grill screens. We did the rest. They also provided baked potatoes, potato salad and green salad.

After dinner we had an evening of karaoke. They asked for volunteers and people were reticent. I volunteered to sing Hotel California, my personal favorite, and Moya joined me. Bev and I stayed and sang many songs while gathering others to join us. Even the CCA commodore sang “house of the rising sun”. We stayed until midnight singing and dancing. Great party!
