South Broad Cove was a perfect anchorage spot. We left around 8:45 to take an adventure boat tour into a few hidden spots. We followed Puffin, a power boat somewhat smaller than Friendship 4. Mark, the captain, knows the area well. It was his suggestion that we go to smoky hole a few days ago. Having a local guide makes it easy to be in places that look very tricky. So we followed Mark into a “hurricane hole” called the Lion’s Den

(A hurricane hole is a very protected harbor where you should be able to survive a hurricane passing by.)
Friendship has a sonar scanner for the bottom so we can see where there are nice anchorage spots. It looked perfect. But we went on…and we visited Pudding Cove on our way to what we thought would be Port Union.
The crossing of Bonavista Bay turned into a choppy bucking ride even with our stabilizers. We were cruising along with Moya, the commodore, nearby. Her smaller boat was rolling quite a bit. The ride was tough. She called us to say she would tuck back into the Bonavista wharf to wait for better weather and seas the next day. We quickly agreed to do the same. Shortly thereafter we were radioed by our friends on Visions of Johanna saying they would join us in Bonavista. It was the right decision for all.
Moya had a small laceration above her eye that I cleaned and put together with steri-strips. She had a problem with her anchor not being adequately secured on deck and had hit her eyebrow on the corner of a hatch as she reached for the anchor. Since head wounds bleed profusely, her white shirt looked much worse than her injury.
Two crew on Visions of Johanna had to get off the boat due to some family emergency. And we hosted the remaining group for cocktails and dinner. It is great fun to have the ability to make impromptu choices that turns out well.
Tomorrow we plan to round Bonavista point in calmer weather and go to Trinity.
