Yesterday we were picked up at the airport after a 12 hour overnight flight and taken by bus to the National park where we boarded a Catamaran for a trip around the Beagle passage. While the Resolution was getting ready to welcome us on board, we were treated to a fun and very interesting wildlife day.
We saw a few Albatross flying around our boat. They have a wingspan of about 12 feet but they look small when they are high above. I am not fast enough to catch a photo of these impressive birds. Today, in discussion with a naturalist, I learned that Albatross are such efficient flyers that they can sleep aloft and just glide. Wow!
The rocks along the passage were covered with birds and sea lions. The photo shows the birds which we all thought were penguins but they are actually cormorants that just have a white chest.
No penguins are in the waters around Ushuaia. (Photo)
We visited the surprisingly small lighthouse that marks the entrance to the passage warning mariners that they are entering a rock filled area. (Photo)
We were ultimately deposited on the dock very close to our boat but were required to take a bus down the dock. No walking allowed due to regulations of the dock.
Our bags were already in our rooms. We got the welcome, the safety drill and cocktails all in rapid succession. Meals are served in a scenic space that has many different tables so that it’s easy to meet our fellow adventurers. We lingered for as long as we could stay awake. The 2 hour ahead time difference made it easy to go to bed early after a very long travel day.
